Christmas Greetings from Lippy Logic

We've not been idle since our last post, oh no.

The 2014 show material is well underway. Bookings are coming in from across the country...

And we promise more laugh-out loud comedy and touching drama - if only we can get the darn printer to print out the drafts (or buy Christine a new printer for Christmas). All we have to do then is work out how to get a hydraulic drill, two guinea pigs and a hot air balloon in the back of the car and on the road to deliver the show...

You mean he puts THAT on his NOSE?!
Meanwhile, we'd like to wish you a very Merry Christmas. Let 2014 be full of peace, smiles, giggles and hilarity, along with moments that catch your breath, exercise your mind and above all, touch your heart.

Thank you very much to everyone who made this such an exciting year for us!

See you soon
Christine and Veronica

Eldroth survives Lippy Logic!

What a wonderful time we had! Great Audience, Fine Canapés, Super Venue!

If you've never been to Eldroth Church you have missed one of the most serene places in England. Well, maybe it wasn't last Saturday night, when we did our "Double Dose of Lippy Logic" show - "serene" wasn't one of the words we heard from the audience afterwards, to be honest.

But thanks to everyone who sent best wishes for broken legs and all that. Christine is pleased to say she managed not to this time. And the very big thank you to John for doing the sound.

The good people of Eldroth Church did everyone reet proud - canapés that excelled their usual high standard, illuminations fit for an olympic stadium, and an audience that seemed to have enjoyed themselves. We'll leave you with what a couple of people have written about the evening - click here to see reviews - and a few photos below taken by Del from Kent (they travelled from far and wide to see the show!)

We do hope the serenity has returned to Eldroth by now...

see you again soon!

Reviews

Eldroth September 2013
The people of the rural communities of Austwick and Lawkland were intrigued earlier in the summer to read the glowing reviews of a show at Grassington Festival by two of their residents – Christine Hooley and Veronica Caperon. So it was no surprise that the picturesque little church at Eldroth was full to capacity for a home performance of their creation, the curiously titled A Double Dose of Lippy Logic.
Christine (left) and Veronica
No-one was disappointed. The engaging personalities and wicked sense of humour of the two ‘women of a certain age’ sparked off each other from the start. This continued through the links between the four set pieces of the show and especially during their anarchic sketch Up the Garden Path (which involved four members of the audience accompanying on garden tools the duo’s mauling of English Country Garden).

Whilst the warm humour and sharp ad-libbing was the thread holding the show together, the real strength was the more serious dramatic pieces, one in each half. The first, Two Friends, had the audience in rapt silence as the nature of a personal tragedy and its effect on the relationship of two close friends gradually unfolded. The second, The Birthday Wish, was in the challenging form of a monologue, bringing together Veronica’s formidable writing skills and Christine’s remarkable ability to get under the skin of the characters she portrays. In both pieces the characters truly came to life, leaving the audience wishing they could get to know them better.

The final piece, a short series of poems written and read by Veronica, showed yet another side of her original and perceptive way of looking at the world as well as her skill with words.

The whole performance was absorbing and thought provoking and was concluded with a reprise of English Country Garden – and therein lies the only criticism. A short additional piece that brought together the wonderful comic talents of these two performers would have rounded off a remarkable evening’s entertainment perfectly. We shall hear more of Lippy Logic. Robert Clarke Craven Herald

Thought things went very well last night. Could hear the audience listening.  Greatly admired the props - simple and very effective.  Towards the end the monologue tips over into something profound.  Enjoyed the first dialogue, tension all the way through. And a lovely venue.  It's good that such an interesting building can be put to so much use. Jean Harrison

I did enjoy your show on Saturday evening – well done – superb. PH
I loved the poems! BH

Settle a week later: the pair took part in "Settle Sessions" a series of evenings through the year bringing short stories and poetry to the masses - or trying to!

Headline Act was Mike Barlow, National Poetry Prize winner and lots of other accolades - his take on "The Birthday Wish" which Christine performed as part of Veronica's literary contribution:
"It was an altogether very friendly and enjoyable evening. I thought Veronica's monologue was real quality and the performance utterly convincing".

High Flying in Eldroth

Watch out Eldroth!
See what all the fuss was about on Saturday 28th September 7.30pm (doors 7pm) Eldroth Church just off the A65 near Austwick and Settle*

Little did the good people of Eldroth church realise what they were letting themselves in for by welcoming "A Double Dose of Lippy Logic"

They'll find out on next Saturday!

We didn't have to be asked twice to reprise our Grassington Fringe show at the beautiful 17th Century stone church, close to Lippy Logic Land.

Barbara, Marjorie, Richard, Avril and Mrs Bentham have rallied their troops, the marquee is ordered, the canapés designed and the wine selected. We just have to turn up with some comedy and drama
and we'll all have a great night - and help raise some funds for Eldroth Church in the process.

Mind you, when they hear our special new opening dedicated to these same good people, they may think twice about having us back again....

So with Christine's ankle fully functioning again and Veronica trying to persuade her to consider a high-wire act this time, tell your friends to come and see the show.

If you don't know what we're on about, click this link to find out more. A Double Dose of Lippy Logic - what the world thought!

*Just one thing - as this is written, there are only two tickets left....

Tickets £8 (includes glass of wine and famous Eldroth canapés) available from our very good friend Barbara on 015242 51446 or Crossleigh Stores in Austwick 015242 51415. Or contact us at lippylogic@gmail.com

At the once sleepy hamlet of Eldroth....

Dust off the props, spruce up the scenery - WE'RE OFF AGAIN!
See what all the fuss was about on Saturday 28th September 7.30pm (doors 7pm).
We've been asked to do A Double Dose of Lippy Logic again (we don't hesitate at these requests), so we are hugely delighted to take the show to the beautiful 17th Century stone church at Eldroth, just off the A65 near Austwick and Settle - and very close to Lippy Logic Land.  Where better!

Our friends, led by Barbara, Marjorie, Avril, Lorna and Mrs Bentham, are going to provide the excellent refreshments for which they are renowned. We'll bring along the comedy and drama that we did at Grassington Festival Fringe earlier this summer - well, now tailored to the delights of Eldroth and Lawkland rather than Glorious Grassington.

So you come along, tell your friends and we'll all have a great night - and help raise some funds for Eldroth Church in the process.

Given time, Christine might relent and let Veronica do her poems again. Also given time, Christine might be able to walk normally again, but we'll tell you about that at the show. (Pleeeeease don't say 'break a leg' to her...)

If you don't know what we're on about, click this link to find out more. A Double Dose of Lippy Logic - what the world thought!

Just one thing - over half the tickets have gone already....

Let's have some fun!

In The Yorkshire Country Garden at the moment in Lippy Logic Land, all manner of wierd and dubiously wonderful things are appearing.

After The Show!

Well, Lippy Logic is well and truly launched!

The show was more than a sell-out (thanks to the box office getting over enthusiastic!)
The audience seemed to like what they saw - and laughed and cried at the right moments...
Booking enquiries: tel: 01729 824537, lippylogic@gmail.com

Thanks to everyone who came along and braved the road closures!

Here are some press reviews and comments from the audience - thanks v much, we really appreciate your comments and support:

My friends and I really enjoyed your ‘Double Dose of Lippy Logic’ last night. What a great achievement for the two of you to engage the audience for such a sustained time. LR

Congratulations on an excellent performance. We enjoyed it immensely. Lippy Logic was so well written and your acting was great. M&GJ

...hugely impressed by the Lippy Logic production at Grassington last night...we did laugh out loud – but for me the real revelation was in the acting and performing of the serious pieces...Two Friends” and “The Birthday Wish” revealed, both in the acting and the writing, a depth of insight into the human heart that was both perceptive and moving. The reincarnation of Norma Knowsley is a character in the Alan Bennett “Talking Heads” tradition, tortured by mental anguish, frustration and quiet desperation. I do hope we can see more of her. I have some inkling of the hard work and mental tension that goes into such a production. You will have your own ideas for the future but Lippy Logic must return. You two have a great talent which deserves a wider audience somehow. You should, and must, feel very proud of what you have achieved. IS

...You carried it off with huge aplomb and made Austwick very proud...The Birthday Wish was equally as poignant for the second time and we enjoyed it very much... G&SG

Well done to you both – it was an excellent show and the audience did enjoy themselves! PD

Had a really good night on Wednesday. Many thanks indeed. AJ

Congratulations on the performance at Grassington...We thoroughly enjoyed it. You really are two very talented artistes!. G&LP

Just wanted to say how much we enjoyed your fringe show last Wednesday!  What a good way to spend an evening – thank you.  Am now destined to be humming a Yorkshire Country Garden for the rest of the week….. ;). SS

Was so pleased for you that your event went so well with a large and appreciative audience...Good luck with any future concerts. CB (venue)

Congratulations! What a great, entertaining evening. What a double act. Especially liked the way you both ad libbed and handled the audience...Watch out Edinburgh! M&IG

Craven Herald's review - click here

Settle News review:
Intro: funny and cheeky with wonderfully bad puns such as the appearance of the magnificant organ.  Loved the physciality of the humour. Audience responded really well to the use of local references such as the calender girls.  Veronica and Chris got the audience to participate confidently and naturally.
Two friends: A very topical subject  - banker fraud.  The exchanges rang true and drew the audience in as more and more information was revealed.  The duo displayed real dramatic range moving from rueful to anger to incredulity to sadness and sympathy with ease.  Within the drama there was still a few wry and belly laughts - a real feat of writing and playing.  Effective set supported the action without detracting.  PS I want that kitchen.
The garden path:  Laugh out loud funny with more delicious word play e.g. sham jam?  no thank you mam and' trowel and error' .  Lovely costumes and special mention to the slugs and their dramtic demise. The audience participation in the musical interlude was wonderful with the 'naughty children' being firmly put in their place by the adlibbing headmistresses as they played their garden implements - with the exception of the rhubarb triangle - is that a groan I hear?     The decibel level of the shrieks of laughter said it all.
The poems: introduced with music and setting the scene Veronica introduced us to her world through her poems.  Her imagination triggered by the seemingly mundane.  They were a mix of short and sweet, sharply observed and whimsical.  Veronica displayed her vocal dexterity and bought the audience into Lippyworld.  Christine- let her read more!
The Birthday Wish: I've seen this before but was still moved by the writing and the performance.  Poignant and tender: the piece allows us glimpses of a troubled past and painful present in a mother daughter relationship and a woman's struggles in middle age.   Again amidst the sadness, there were laughts and the audience seemed suprised to find themselves laughing literally through their tears.  The set and props really added value and somehow made a chair look lonely.   The audience were visbily touched as it clearly resonated wth many people's experinces.  Wonderful.
...I did notice a few hiccups in delivery which I''m sure you noticed but they did not detract from the overall effect.  I did find it hard to switch back to the funny as the birthday wish is so powerful althugh I did think it was a good idea to leave 'em laughing.
A fabulous debut - on behalf of ladies and gents of a cetain age - more please.  JJ

THANKS EVERSO MUCH EVERYONE - NOW WATCH THIS SPACE!

Here's Lippy Logic's programme!

A Double Dose of Lippy Logic with Christine Hooley and Veronica Caperon at Grassington Festival Fringe on Wednesday 26th June 8pm at The Chapel - Methodist Church. Tickets £6. Box office: 01756 752691. Tickets also available at Crossleigh Stores, Austwick 015242 51415

If you want a good show, produce it yourself!

Two women from the Settle area decided to take matters into their own hands when they couldn't find any good comedy and drama for ladies of a certain age to perform. Christine Hooley and Veronica Caperon have written their own show "A Double Dose of Lippy Logic" which they will present at the Grassington Festival Fringe in June.

When not treading the boards, Christine runs the local village shop and Veronica is a professional photographer and copywriter. "We both really enjoy doing community theatre and we want to combine comedy with more dramatic roles. But it's difficult to find suitable things, so we've put our own together!" explained Christine. However, they have designed the programme to appeal to both men and women. "We've had a hoot preparing the material. While some of the subject matter is designed to have the audience laughing out loud, other sketches are more serious and moving" Veronica added.

Some of the material is specially written for Grassington. The girls draw inspiration from everyday life: "There's a comedy sketch about our exploits as novice vegetable growers during last year's wettest ever summer. The audience can expect to come face to face with slugs and other gastropods with that one!" says Christine.

In "Two Friends", there's a tense exchange between close friends when human frailties are unexpectedly exposed.

Despite strenuous efforts to the contrary (by unnamed 'friends'!), Veronica will do some of her poems!

The trials and tribulations of caring for ageing parents are also tackled. Veronica explained: "Christine received critical acclaim last autumn when she performed a monologue written by myself. It's about a feisty fifty-something local government officer coping with her mother's increasing frailty and we're looking forward to taking it to a wider audience".

The show is on Wednesday 26th June at 8pm at The Methodist Church in Grassington as part of the Fringe programme. Tickets (£6) are available from the Festival Box office (boxoffice@grassington-festival.org.uk, 01756 752691), as well as Crossleigh Stores in Austwick 015242 51415.

Mad, Mad March!

March was a busy month for the Lippy Logic.

Some of the year we're part of Austwick Community PLayers - from November to the beginning of March. Well, that's when we being actors, In fact we're both heavily involved through the year, one as Treasurer and the other as script writer (er... Playwright if you don't mind - ED)

This year we and our fellow thespians treated the good people of Austwick, Lawkland and surrounds to an extravaganza based on what happened when the Roman Imperial Army reached that corner of North Yorkshire. It was about 122AD (exact chronology is lost in the mists of history) when bulls were oxen, men wore skirts and women wore the trousers. Said Roman Imperial Army had rings run round them by the canny local women as intrigue, enterprise and sleight of hand ruled the roost!

Your heroic Lippy Logic team played 1. a young and naive (surely Christine's most challenging rule to date) welsh girl travelling the north of England in search of her beloved Hefin and 2. Adrian the camp commander (camp by name etc etc...and the Players were short of men...so Veronica made the supreme sacrifice -again). DVD of the show available at a mere £4!

BUT NOW....
all eyes down as Christine and Veronica get ready for the Lippy Logic show at Grassington Festival Fringe on Wednesday evening 26th June at Grassington Chapel. box office 01756 752691 www.grassington-festival.org.uk

The Molluscs are Massing!

As the first stirrings of Spring appear amid the snowdrops and crocus - crocii - crocusiius - evidence abounds that the molluscs and gastropods are on the move to attack innocent Lippy Logic gardens in The Yorkshire Dales.

All will be revealed in due course at The Grassington Festival in June...

Hallo there!

Well let's get this show on the road! There's plenty of logic coming your way, from how to grow courgettes in the Yorkshire Dales to handling shock news from your best friend. Stand by to be amazed!
